Class schedules are flexible, and designed so that students train with other students of the same age and skill level. We also offer mixed rank classes allowing students of all ranks as well as families to train together.
Hanshi Larry Sullivan, 10th Degree Black Belt, is the founder and Grand Master of Sullivan’s American Kenpo and the USA Karate Organization. He has been a practitioner of the Martial Arts for over 30 years and is a well known, well respected and sought after instructor. Hanshi Larry is considered by many to be the area’s leading authority on the Martial Arts of Kenpo/ Jui-Jitsu/ Karate and Shaolin Kempo Karate.
Shihan John Agostini is the Chief Instructor at the Rehoboth School and has been training in the Martial Arts of Shaolin Kenpo Karate and Sullivan’s American Kenpo for 25 years. Shihan John continues to train under the guidance of Grand Master Hanshi Larry Sullivan and has been entrusted by Hanshi Larry to continue the tradition of excellence here in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. He has earned the Black Belt Rank of Rokudan, 6th Degree. Shihan John and his wife Kim (the school’s Program Director), can be found at the Dojo Monday through Friday from 4:15 PM to 8:15 PM, and on Saturdays from 9 AM to 1 PM. Walk ins are welcome! Shihan John M. Agostini is a 6th degree Black Belt, a Certified Master Instructor of Sullivan’s American Kenpo and the Head Instructor of USA Karate – Rehoboth, MA. Shihan John has trained for 25 years under Grand Master, Hanshi Larry Sullivan, founder of Sullivan’s American Kenpo. Shihan John began training in the Martial Arts of Shaolin Kenpo Karate and Sullivan’s American Kenpo, earned his Black Belt and began teaching with Hanshi Larry Sullivan at the original USA Karate – Pawtucket location on East Avenue. Shihan John continues his training and in partnership with Hanshi Larry Sullivan, Shihan John opened the USA Karate – Rehoboth School in 2006 where he continues to teach his martial art skills to children and adults of all ages. Shihan John focuses on self-defense, conditioning, traditional weapons training, hand to hand combat, ground fighting & tournament training while teaching students the value of effort, self control, goal setting and achievement through hard work.
Shihan John is fluent in Spanish and grew up in New York City. He graduated from Iona College in 1971 with a BA in History and following graduation, Shihan John joined the U.S. Navy attending Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He spent a total of 24 years in the US Navy, 9 ½ years active duty and 14 ½ years reserve on four ships.
While deployed to the western Pacific on the USS Juneau LPD-10, Shihan proudly served his country in Vietnam, Tonkin Gulf including the rescue of downed air crews. Additionally, Shihan qualified as Officer of the Deck and CIC Watch Officer. On his second ship, USS Kinkaid DD-965 , Shihan was selected as part of the Commissioning Crew for a new class of gas turbine propelled ships. He also qualified as Tactical Action Officer and served as 1st Division and Personnel Officer.
The USS Hawkins DD-873, Shihan’s third ship is special to him as the ship he was on when he met his wife Kim in 1978. The USS Hawkins, stationed in Philadelphia, was a Reserve Training Ship and Shihan had dual responsibilities as the ship’s Weapons & Navigation Officer.
The USS Harlan County LST-1196 saw him deploying on Special Operations above the Arctic Circle as the ship’s Chief Engineer and Bridge Watch Officer. While a Commander in the USNR, Shihan John returned to Newport, RI to the Naval War College where he was part of the analysis group. Shihan John participated in numerous war game activities as an umpire and war game analyst.
During his 24 year career as a Naval Officer Shihan John received awards and recognition including…Naval Achievement Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Award. Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon, Naval Service Deployment Medal, the Reserve Service Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation Award.
Shihan John became a “Shellback” in June 1974 when he crossed the equator and a “Blue Nose” in January 1981 having been on Special Operations north of the Arctic Circle.
Upon leaving active duty, Shihan John began a 29 year career with Johnson & Johnson where he was presented with the Signature of Leadership Award for coordinating the implementation of life saving devices for military use with respect to head trauma, meeting stringent military criteria.
Shihan John & Kim married in 1981 and have been married for 36 years. They have raised two wonderful children together.
Shihan retired from Johnson & Johnson in 2010.
Shihan retired from the military and holds the rank of Commander, USNR, retired.
